Austin’s Asian community consists of over 30,000 people, almost 5% of the city’s total population. Domestic violence occurs in all communities. However, Asian victims of domestic violence are less likely to report abuse or victimization. They are also less likely to seek help from mainstream service agencies, due to cultural and language barriers. Asian victims of domestic violence face many barriers in addition to those faced by all victims of domestic violence and abuse. These barriers may include:

  • lack of fluency in the English language
  • lack of family or friends in the U.S.
  • threats to immigration status
  • lack of knowledge about existing legal protection, immigration laws, and service agencies
  • religious beliefs or cultural practices not understood by other Americans...

...and many more. SAHELI exists to break down some of the cultural and language barriers. We do not duplicate existing services; we partner with local agencies to make their services more accessible to Austin’s Asian community. We offer flexibility and sensitivity to an Asian victim’s varied and complex needs, as well as offer long-term support throughout a survivor’s journey toward a life free from violence and abuse.
