From the Family Advocate:
During January 2006, SAHELI received 48 calls and
5 emails for assistance, including calls on the helpline, as well
as calls/emails directly to SAHELI advocates and staff. Calls are
usually from victims/survivors, existing clients, family members
or friends of victims, advocates from other agencies, potential
volunteers, and others who want more information about SAHELI.
Of these calls 37 were from clients receiving ongoing
advocacy services, and 1 was a new client who received one-time
referral assistance.
Furthermore, SAHELI staff and advocates provided 8 face-to-face
sessions for 4 clients in the month of November.

From the Community Educator:
During the month of January, 6 presentations were
made, reaching over 150 people. These presentations aimed to educate
the public about SAHELI and reach potential volunteers. SAHELI also
boothed at the Lunar New Year Celebration. This event, hosted by
the Asian American Cultural Center, welcomed in the Year of the
Dog with multi-cultural entertainment and excellent food! This was
a great opportunity to educate the Pan Asian community about our
organization.

Upcoming Events:
We have several exciting events planned for this
Spring. A special benefit production of the Vagina Monologues will
be held on February 24th and 25th to raise awareness and money for
local Austin organizations working to end violence against women
and girls. SAHELI was selected as a special beneficiary, and we
are honored for this recognition. The event will be held at 1204
Cedar Avenue, at 8pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased before
the event, at BookWoman.
On March 8th, we will be the beneficiaries of Lyrically
Speaking, an evening of poetry, song, spoken word, and advocacy.
The performance will feature two emerging Asian American artists,
Ed Bok Lee and Cynthia Lin, who have performed nationally and are
known for their thought provoking work and universal appeal. The
event will be held at the Copa Bar and Grill in downtown Austin,
at 8pm. Tickets are $10 for the public, $5 for students, and can
be bought at the door.
On March 25th, SAHELI will be hosting Spring Family
Festival, an event that will create a comfortable space for people
of all ages to promote healthy family interactions. We will have
workshops, entertainment, Peer Theater, arts and crafts tables,
and food! Stay tuned for more details!!
If you want more details on these events, or would
like to volunteer with them, please email: sladha@saheli-austin.org.

Volunteer Training:
The next SAHELI Volunteer Training Session will
be held on February 25th, from 1-5pm. This training is required
for those interested in community education, doing research, working
as an interpreter, and/or working with our children's programs.
Also, please feel free to join us if you are just interested in
learning more about family violence in Asian cultures or feel like
you want a refresher. RSVP to sladha@saheli-austin.org.

Anniversary Party:
SAHELI will be celebrating its 14th anniversary
on February 26th! Join us for a picnic potluck in Zilker Park, celebrating
14 years of dedicated
service towards building safer communities. Whether a new volunteer,
long time member or friend, please join us for food and fun, and
a chance to meet others within the organization. We will be meeting
by the tables near the playscape in Zilker Park, and parking is
free. Please contact either Sonia Ladha (356-1565) or Kalpana Sutaria
(252-1619) to RSVP and indicate what you would like to bring.
