From the Family Advocate:
During June 2006, SAHELI received 75 calls on the
helpline. Calls are usually from victims/survivors, existing clients,
family members or friends of victims, advocates from other agencies,
potential volunteers, and others who want more information about
SAHELI.
Of these calls 2 were from new clients who are receiving
ongoing advocacy services, and 8 were from new clients who received
one-time referral assistance.
Furthermore, SAHELI staff and advocates provided
17 face-to-face sessions for 8 clients in the month of June.
From the Community Educator:
In June, SAHELI continued to educate the Austin
community in matters of domestic violence and sexual assault. We
presented to The University of Texas International Office Staff,
discussing the dynamics of domestic violence in Asian/Asian-American
communities. We spoke to the Center for Child Protection, discussing
differences found in parenting styles among Asian and non-Asian
cultures. In addition, we presented to the Little Walnut Creek Library,
discussing cultural considerations in Asian communities, giving
practical guidelines on how to improve interactions with Asian immigrants.
Finally, SAHELI for Asian Families boothed at the PRIDE Festival.
Many thanks to the volunteers who helped booth this festival!
SAHELI continues to build ties with the Austin Asian
community. If you or an organization you know would like SAHELI
to speak about our services, or discuss ways in which we can work
together to provide important information to the Austin community,
please contact: sladha@saheli-austin.org
Free Interpreter Training in September
In order to address the shortage of trained Asian
interpreters in the Austin area, SAHELI would like to invite interested
members to participate in an interpreter training program free-of-charge.
This 24-hour training will be conducted by Esther Diaz, an experienced
trainer and educator with the Austin Area Translators and Interpreters
Association. The languages that have required interpretation assistance
in the past include: Arabic, Bengali, Cambodian, Farsi, Gujarati,
Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Mandarin, Tagalog, Tamil, Urdu,

In lieu of tuition for the training, SAHELI requests
that participants volunteer their interpretation services to SAHELI
for at least 15 hours.
Trained interpreters in the Austin area usually
charge an average hourly fee of about $30-$100, depending on experience.
