From the Family Advocate:
During May 2006, SAHELI received 32 calls on the
helpline. Calls are usually from victims/survivors, existing clients,
family members or friends of victims, advocates from other agencies,
potential volunteers, and others who want more information about
SAHELI.
Of these calls 2 were from new clients who are receiving
ongoing advocacy services, and 3 were from new clients who received
one-time referral assistance. Furthermore, SAHELI staff and advocates
provided 19 face-to-face sessions for 4 clients in the month of
May.
From the Community Educator:
In May, SAHELI continued to educate the Austin community
in matters of domestic violence and sexual assault. We presented
to members of the Austin Police Academy Cadets, discussing the dynamics
of domestic violence in Asian cultures. The cadets were very responsive
and interested in learning how to improve their interactions with
the Asian community. SAHELI also presented to LifeWorks, discussing
cultural considerations in Asian communities and gave practical
guidelines on how to improve interactions with Asian clients. Finally,
we boothed at the 7th annual Asian Pacific American Cultural Celebration,
celebrating Asian Pacific American Cultural Heritage Month.
SAHELI continues to build ties with the Austin Asian
community. If you or an organization you know would like SAHELI
to speak about our services, or discuss ways in which we can work
together to provide important information to the Austin community,
please contact: sladha@saheli-austin.org
