From the Family Advocate:

During February 2006, SAHELI received 13 calls and 1 email for assistance, including calls on the helpline, as well as calls/emails directly to SAHELI advocates and staff. Calls are usually from victims/survivors, existing clients, family members or friends of victims, advocates from other agencies, potential volunteers, and others who want more information about SAHELI.

Furthermore, SAHELI staff and advocates provided 8 face-to-face sessions for 2 clients in the month of February.

From the Community Educator:

During the month of February, SAHELI reached over 80 people through community education presentations.

SAHELI presented to a group of lawyers that specialize in Family Law. We presented on general best practices when working with Asian clients, including cultural competency issues. We received great feedback and interest in further training on this issue.

SAHELI was the proud beneficiary of two events in February: A performance of the Vagina Monologues at PLAY! Theater was a huge success. The event was sold out both nights, and it was a great opportunity to inform the Austin community about SAHELI. Lyrically Speaking was another successful event, drawing over 100 people for this night of poetry, spoken word, song and advocacy.

Review: Lyrically Speaking:
Contributed by Riddhi Mukhopadhyay

On March 8th, the Copa Bar and Grill opened its doors to a night of poetry, song, spoken word and advocacy to benefit SAHELI. The event Lyrically Speaking featured two nationally recognized artists on the cutting edge of Asian American urban art – Ed Bok Lee, a poet and author from Minneapolis, and Cynthia Lin, a singer/songwriter from Chicago.
Lyrically Speaking also showcased local talent with music from Angell Tsang and poetry and humor from local playwright Soo Jin Lee. Organized by Pura Vida Group, L.L.C, the evening’s performances were not only filled with energy and humor, but also raised awareness about SAHELI and the need for our services in the Asian American community.

You can find out more information about Ed Bok Lee at www.edboklee.com and Cynthia Lin at www.cynthialin.com.
